THE PRICE OF STANDARD RAILWAY GAUGE TO COASTAL AREA

it was with great expectations that the construction of the standard railway gauge Fri Mombasa to Nairobi Kenya would ease transport in the whole country. Every Kenyan was excited by the whole idea of having it constructed upon Kenyan land. It never took many years and soon it WA scomplited and ready to transport both cargo and human beings too.

It continued on it normal operation until one time when the president Uhuru made clear announcement that crap carried by large tracks would now be transported through the standard railway gauge. Things took another turn and that seemed to the Savior became the tormentor.

Coastal people pleaded with the government to withdraw the transportation of cargo by use of the standard railway gauge, they shouted the matter to their local leaders and government at large.,their voices hit on deaf hears. A new way to show government the seriousness of the matter was born, The Black Monday.

Black Monday was to always demonstrate each Monday to show government disagreement on the issue. Coastal people would match all the way to Buxton to show their cry out to the government. They claimed that the new way of transporting cargo was undermining their coastal economy.

First it was lose of employment to the track drivers whom their work was taken by the standard railway gauge  when it started caring home the cargo they used to carry. Through this it would mean the families of the affected would have  poor living standards since the bread winner was jobless.

The coastal income by traders would go down since some of the drivers would promote them by buying gifts to their loved one from traders and since the drivers were jobless that income would cease to be. Traders would have low returns from since their customers are no more. It would drain their income as well.

During Black Monday some of leaders would be arrested for alleged insightment to the local people and would be locked in cells. Again police would come to curb the situation by throwing teargas to the demonstrators and in the process some would get killed or hurt.

On other hand coastal income would lower since the tax they used to get from the port when one is getting their goods was shifted to other area. This drag the coastal economy behind. The port would become insignificant to the people of coast since it would bring no income to them. The economy of coastal area was really draining into abyss.
